Houses often have rooms with wainscoting or sections of wood paneling on the lower portions of the walls. Wainscoting was initially used to provide insulation, but nowadays, it’s added to create visual interest.

Wainscoting can also be installed on the outside of a building. With a pole barn, wainscoting can be used for both aesthetic and practical reasons.

Create an Attractive Design

The wainscoting that’s used on the outside of a pole barn is generally made of steel. Although 3 feet is the typical width of panels, wainscoting is available in other sizes.

On the exterior of a pole barn, adding wainscoting along the bottoms of the walls can create a contrast with other parts of the building. You can choose wainscoting that’s the same color as the roof so that the bottom and top of the building match, or you can use wainscoting that matches the trim so all the accents on the building are the same color.

Prevent Damage to Your Pole Barn

Wainscoting can do more than just improve the appearance of your pole barn. It can also protect it from damage.

Pole barns typically house tractors, trucks, and other equipment used on a farm. A person who is operating a large vehicle or tractor might accidentally strike the side of a pole barn, or a tire might dislodge a stone from the ground and send it flying toward the building. If that happens, wainscoting along the bottom of the pole barn can take the impact while protecting the underlying structure from harm.

Save Money in the Long Run

If the wainscoting on your pole barn suffers significant damage, or if it no longer looks attractive due to years of wear and tear, you’ll be able to simply replace one or more portions. That will be much less expensive than installing new siding on the entire side of the building.
