horse pole barnWhen it comes to designing the perfect horse barn, every detail matters. From stall layouts and ventilation to tack storage and durable materials, a well-planned barn helps create a safe, comfortable, and efficient space for both horses and their owners.

This recent project completed by CHA Pole Barns in Front Royal, Virginia, is a great example of how a custom pole barn can be tailored to meet the unique needs of an equestrian property while providing lasting beauty and functionality.

Built Around the Customer’s Vision

For this project, our customer wanted a horse barn that would provide comfortable accommodations for their horses while offering practical storage and workspace for everyday use.

The finished building measures 36′ x 48′ x 12′ and includes a spacious 12′ x 48′ open lean-to, creating additional covered space for equipment, supplies, or protection from the elements.

Every aspect of the design was carefully selected to create a barn that’s as functional as it is attractive.

Spacious Horse Stalls Designed for Everyday Use

The heart of this barn is its three 12′ x 12′ horse stalls, providing ample room for the horses while making daily care easier for their owners.

Each stall includes:

  • Interior sliding stall doors with protective grilles
  • Beautiful Dutch doors featuring classic X-buck styling
  • Tongue-and-groove wood walls extending up to 8 feet high
  • Feed holes built directly into the stall fronts
  • Partition grilles between adjoining stalls to improve airflow and visibility

These features create a comfortable environment for the horses while making feeding, cleaning, and daily interaction more convenient.

A Dedicated Tack Room

No horse barn is complete without organized storage, and this project includes a fully enclosed 12′ x 12′ tack room designed to keep equipment protected and easily accessible.

The tack room features:

  • Tongue-and-groove interior walls
  • Bright white metal ceiling
  • R-19 insulation in both the walls and above the ceiling to help maintain comfortable temperatures year-round
  • A 4′ x 3′ double sliding window with a hinged exterior grille for added ventilation and security

Having a dedicated tack room keeps saddles, bridles, feed, and supplies organized while protecting valuable equipment from moisture and changing weather conditions.

Thoughtful Exterior Details

Beyond functionality, this horse barn offers timeless curb appeal.

Custom exterior features include:

  • Two large 12′ x 12′ split sliding barn doors
  • Two standard entry doors for convenient access
  • Decorative wainscoting
  • A beautiful 3′ x 3′ cupola topped with a classic weathervane
  • A spacious, open lean-to that expands the building’s versatility

Together, these details give the barn a traditional equestrian appearance while providing the durability homeowners expect from a custom pole barn.

Why Custom Pole Barns Make Excellent Horse Barns

Every horse owner has unique needs, and one of the greatest advantages of custom pole barn construction is flexibility.

Whether you’re planning a small hobby farm or a larger equestrian facility, a custom design allows you to incorporate the features that matter most, including:

  • Stall configurations designed around your horses
  • Tack and feed rooms
  • Covered lean-tos
  • Equipment storage
  • Natural ventilation
  • Insulated workspaces
  • Custom doors, windows, and finishes

Rather than settling for a one-size-fits-all solution, your barn is designed specifically for the way you live and work.
