If you’re planning to build a new horse barn from scratch, you can customize it in a way that will best suit your particular needs. It’s important to think not only about your current situation but also about how things may change in the future. Here are some features you should include and things you should consider when designing a horse barn.

Make Sure There’s Adequate Ventilation

When urine breaks down, it releases ammonia into the air. A horse barn, therefore, needs to have good ventilation. The size and layout of the barn and the number of animals will influence the way you will ventilate the building. A large door at either end may be sufficient, or you may want to install windows in some or all of the stalls and vents in the roof to ensure that there’s good airflow.

Include Room for Storage

You will need a lot of supplies to care for your horses. Feed, hay, saddles, bridles, brushes, and other items can take up a good deal of space, especially if you have several horses. Be sure to plan accordingly.

Your horse barn should have a separate area for tack. If you decide to store food and hay in the barn, designate a place that horses won’t be able to access. That may mean putting feed and hay inside a stall that isn’t being used or creating a separate room strictly for that purpose.

Plan for Your Future Needs

Even if you only have one or two horses now, that may change in the future. Building an addition can be expensive. You’ll be better off in the long run if you build a larger barn than you currently need and set it up with some extra stalls.

If you have more horses in the future, you will be able to accommodate them without having to modify the building. If you don’t acquire more horses down the road, you’ll have extra space for storage.

You may even want to consider renting out one or more stalls that you aren’t using to a horse owner who lives nearby. That can be an easy way to generate a steady flow of additional income.
